  • The Real Moral Dilemma of Self-Driving Cars

We talk about all the potentially challenging situations autonomous cars could get into but not about how human drivers are not very good. Tens of thousands die on the roads every year in collisions, most of which could be prevented by autonomous vehicles. The self-driving technology is already at a state where it can save lives if only it were more widely implemented. Here are 10 of the coolest self-driving vehicles companies have come up with. Self-driving vehicles haven’t been given the go-ahead for widespread use on America’s streets and highways yet, but that hasn’t stopped automakers from designing them. Here are 10 of the coolest ones they’ve come up with. Number 10. Mercedes-Benz F O 15 Luxury in Motion. Seating 4 in an arrangement that is more like a living room than an automobile, the carmaker promises this ride will be one filled with comfort and leisure. Who knows, maybe someday getting stuck in traffic will be a good thing.  Number 9. Nissan IDS. Realizing there are many people out there who can’t tolerate anybody’s driving but their own, Nissan designed this car to mimic the operator’s style. The feature is optional, offering those who often get ferried around by truly terrifying motorists a glimmer of hope for calmer days ahead.  Number 8. Rinspeed Σtos. Sure, driverless cars can help people multitask, but they still can’t give humans the ability to be in two places at the same time. Or can they? This concept vehicle comes complete with an errand-running drone that can be commanded to fetch and deliver a variety of items including flower bouquets. Number 7. Chevrolet FNR. Stargazers, this one is for you. The interior seats offer deep reclining positions, and much of the car’s top is see-though, allowing for great night sky viewing.  Number 6. Truck-Mounted Attenuators. The crash guards have proven to be an asset to worker and driver safety in construction zones. Florida’s Department of Transportation is considering adding driverless models that can travel wherever they’re led.  Number 5. Daimler’s Highway Pilot. This technology recently got to take a whirl on the Autobahn while attached to a Mercedes-Benz Actros truck. The ultimate intention is for the add on to serve as more of a driver assistant than a replacement, doing some piloting but requiring occasional human input as well.  Number 4. Freightliner Semi-Truck. This one really is meant to do all the driving – as long as the path ahead is nothing but wide-open highway. The more detailed work of navigating the turns and tight spaces of cities remains the responsibility of the fully sentient being in the cab.  Number 3. The Google Self-Driving Car Project. The company has created scads of little, bubble-like autos and added numerous modified Lexus SUVs to the mix. They’ve driven over a collective million miles, chronicling both community reactions and unforeseen circumstances along the way.  Number 2. Audi A7 Sportback – Self-Driving Version. While many autonomous cars are still in the concept phase, this model is very close to production-ready. The delay appears to largely be a matter of legalities. Number 1. Yamaha’s Motobot. Sure, taking a spin in a self-driving car sounds great, but what about those who prefer to travel by motorcycle? Yamaha may have that group covered, as this robot is being designed to maneuver the two-wheeled machines like a pro. Maybe once complete, Motobot will start giving rides.  Which self-driving vehicle do you think is the coolest?

Here I show you the self-guided LEGO vehicles I designed for a local train show. The vehicles use the Power Functions system for power and a magnet connected to the steering system to follow a wire underneath the road plates. This is modeled after the Faller Car System used for traditional model layouts. For instructions on how to build the vehicle frames, and more detailed information you can read the post on my website: http://jkbrickworks.com/self-guided-lego-vehicles/ Since these were being shown in Ottawa, I styled the buses after the OC Transpo commuter buses. We talk about all the potentially challenging situations autonomous cars could get into but not about how human drivers are not very good. Tens of thousands die on the roads every year in collisions, most of which could be prevented by autonomous vehicles. Sponsored by BMW I wanted to make a video about autonomous cars for some time but I hadn't had the opportunity. The self-driving technology is already at a state where it can save lives if only it were more widely implemented. He was also the first to jailbreak the PlayStation 3, allowing users to play with unauthorized software. Now this 28-year-old technical wunderkind is up against Waymo, Tesla, Uber, and most of the auto industry in the race to build the first fully operational autonomous vehicle. "I want to win self-driving cars," Hotz told Reason. Whereas Tesla and Waymo are developing complex systems with expensive LIDAR and other sensors, his company, Comma.ai, is trying to bring plug-and-play driverless technology to the masses. "We're running it on a phone," says Hotz. He's taking an approach drastically different than his well-financed competition, and is operating with $3.1 million in seed money. Comma's dozen-member team, which works out of a residential house in San Francisco, has built technology that takes over the existing RADAR and drive-by-wire systems in modern cars, incorporates a smartphone's camera and processor, and then makes the car drive itself. "Google is going to lose because there's no market for a $100,000 system," says Hotz. "For us, we're just going to push the software update. And then—boom—you don't have to pay attention anymore. Done." Hotz has a history of taking on tech titans, with mixed reactions. After the iPhone jailbreak, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sent him a letter of congratulations. After he hacked the PS3, Sony sued him. Hotz quickly became a cause celebre of so-called hacktivist groups including Anonymous and LulzSec. They attacked Sony's network, despite Hotz's protests, igniting a firestorm of legal and media scrutiny. Comma.ai is Hotz's attempt to take on the big players in a new way. The company makes an app called Chiffr that turns a user's phone into a dashcam and monitors its GPS and accelerometers. Now Comma is launching Panda, an open source, $88 dongle that plugs into the car, links it to the phone, and puts out fine-grain detail about every aspect of a drive. Hotz ingests all the data from Chiffr and Panda users and feeds it to his artificial intelligence system, which then learns how to drive. According to Hotz, this approach gives him significant advantages over competitors such as Waymo. His network is entirely crowdsourced and running on some of the most popular cars in the country. He doesn't need to build another expensive, specially designed vehicle and employ a trained driver and an engineer every time he wants to add another data point. And all his data come from real-world experience. Hotz says Waymo and others take a rule-based approach to driving that doesn't reflect the reality of how people operate cars. "The humans ain't changing to match the self-driving spec," he says. "In order to really get access to the full, diverse spectrum of what driving is, you need a huge crowdsourced database." While Tesla's training model is more closely aligned with his, Hotz says the company will similarly be restricted to the high-end market. He got into a public spat with Tesla founder Elon Musk in 2015, after Hotz says the mogul changed the terms of a deal for him to build a better vision system for Tesla's Autopilot than the one supplied by partner company Mobileye. Musk claims Hotz bragged that he could build a better system, and then welched on the bet. "All I said was I could build a better vision system than Mobileye, myself, in 3 months," replies Hotz. "And I kind of did that." For full text and links, go to https://reason.com/reasontv/2017/10/27/george-hotz-self-driving-autonomous-car Produced by Justin Monticello. John Leonard Professor, MIT/CSAIL Abstract This talk will discuss the critical role of mapping and localization in the development of self-driving vehicles. After a discussion of some of the recent amazing progress and open technical challenges in the development of self-driving vehicles, we will discuss the past, present and future of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) in robotics. We will review the history of SLAM research and will discuss some of the major challenges in SLAM, including choosing a map representation, developing algorithms for efficient state estimation, and solving for data association and loop closure. We will also present recent results on real-time dense mapping using RGB-D cameras and object-based mapping in dynamics environments. This is a joint work with Tom Whelan, Michael Kaess, John McDonald, Hordur Johannsson, Maurice Fallon, David Rosen, Mark VanMiddlesworth, Ross Finman Paul Huang, Liam Paull, and Dehann Fourie. Speaker Biography John J. Leonard is Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering and Associate Department Head for Research in the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering.
